Special thanks to Linda Halpin for sharing her wonderful tissue holder with me. It is one of the projects my quilting students are doing. With this project they learn how to accurately cut with a rotary cutter, how to sew a true 1/4" seam allowance, how to press, and how to zigzag. Most have never sewn before. They keep some tissue holders for themselves to give to family and friends, but most are made to sell to raise money for the N.E.W. Life Center.
This is an “almost free” pattern. That means you owe nothing until you make something from the pattern. THEN you owe a check or money for $1.00 (or more if the spirit so moves you) to help fund the N.E.W. Life Center at St. Luke’s. This one-time fee allows you to make as many tissue holders as you like, guilt free.
Step #1:
Cut one rectangle 6-1/2" x 5-3/4". This will be the OUTSIDE of the tissue holder. Cut one rectangle 7-3/4" x 5-3/4". This will be the INSIDE of the tissue holder. It will show around the opening of the tissue holder. If using striped fabric, run the stripes the “long” way. See illustration. Help at-risk families.
Step #2:
With right sides together and raw edges even, match and pin both short sides. Since one is “taller” they will not lay flat. Give hope to struggling families for the future.
Step #3:
With 1/4" seam allowance, sew OUTSIDE and INSIDE together along short sides. Help teach life skills and build self-esteem.
Step #4:
Turn tissue holder right side out. Press seam allowances under smaller (OUTSIDE) rectangle. Help prepare clients for employment and create small businesses.
Step #5:
Center OUTSIDE so that equal amounts of INSIDE show at each edge. Raw edges should be even. Assist children to succeed in school through tutoring and special programs.
Step #6:
Bring edges toward center, overlapping 1/4". Pin. Offer ways to teach anger management and good communication skills to end violence.
Step #7:
Stitch short edges with 1/4" seam allowances. Zigzag to keep edges from fraying. Help at-risk families to learn to help themselves.
Step #8:
Turn Tissue Holder right side out. Stuff with tissue and do the “Happy Dance!” Thank you for YOUR help!
