My father is a volunteer fireman and holds a regular full-time job as well. I made this photo transfer quilt for him last year for Christmas and he loved it.

It features a collection of patches from fire departments (the kind they sew on the sleeve of their uniform) around the world. When all was said and done I had almost 200 patches in the quilt. (Collecting the images of the patches to transfer took the longest.)

I ironed all the photo-tranasfer patches onto 6” squares of fabric and then just sewed them into rows. I enlarged the patch for my father's department's to 8½ X 11 and put smack in the middle.

I found this great fabric that reminded me of fire in a store in Chinatown in Boston that I used as a border between blocks. I don't remember the exact dimensions but that thing came out huge. My mother told my father it was just for looks and to hang it up (mom is an expert quilter) but dad uses it for naps and says it is the best sleep he gets.

I saw your piece on photo transfer quilts on "Simply Quilts" on HGTV and it inspired me. My husband works for a police department and is on a policing association and they need a fund- raiser.

My husband wants me to make another quilt, this time with police department patches and raffle it off. I told him HE had to collect the patches in that case because that was the hardest part!

PS: I finished the quilt very shortly (VERY) before Christmas, so I wrapped it up (which was a chore in and of itself as it was so big), and realized I never took a photo of it so I had my dad take photos of it. It looks lumpy in the photo because my mother is actually laying under it! My dad threw it over the top of her (even her head) while she slept on the bed so he could photograph it!
