While on vacation this spring in the UK I visited Chatsworth in Sheffield, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. This floor was in one of the libraries and I thought it would have taken the tile setter as long to make this pattern as it would a quilter. I don't think the curator had ever seen someone take a picture of a floor before.

PS: I couldn't resist taking this shot. (Smaller inset.) It's the inside of a stall in the ladies loo. By far the classiest bathroom I found during my two weeks there, and I didn't get caught taking the photo either! Although by then I'm sure they were used to the oddball American.
