Ella Hinson from Tallahassee, FL and I played a bit during our workshop together and came up with two designs: Ella's Gold Bars and Ella's Window Panes.
Gold Bars, shown here, features a 1½" (cut size) strip sewn to the top of the Background fabrics. (Press all seam allowances towards the wider/background strip.) The placement line on the rotary template is placed at the seam joining the inserted strip and the Twist fabric in Step #5.
Obviously, the Background strip doesn't need to be quite as wide as the pattern calls for, unless you care to make an extra cut. It only needs to be about 4½" wide.
The inserted strips (gold in Ella's blocks) jog at the seams joining the blocks for short vertical and horizontal accent lines throughout the quilt giving it a kaleidoscopic quality.
