I volunteered at a daycare for early Alzheimers. It is called Sarah Care in Omaha, NE. It is a lovely place and I wish it had been available when my parents were stricken with the disease. They asked me for craft ideas. I thought it would be fun to make a quilt from coloring book mandalas. The "guests" seemed to like coloring the mandalas. Then I appliqued each mandala on 4 jewel tone squares of the colors they used for coloring and quilted them accentuating the design of the mandala. The quilt was bordered with prairie points facing each other on a batik border similar to one I saw in the Quilters Magazine. They hung it for display where they could all see the mandalas they colored. Sarah Care has a picture wall with large photos of each guest and their family. The guests see the photos when they enter Sarah Care each day. It is always new to them and something to talk with them about. That is what I love about being with people with Alzheimer's, I never have to worry about repeating myself.
Coloring mandalas is a great way to pass time. It was amazing how well most of them did. I transferred them at Office Depot using your transfer paper and ironed them onto 300 count white percale. I will share your craft ideas at Sarah Care. Thank you for the instructions. You are a blessing to your Mom and her peers to be a "cruise director". I'm glad to hear you have moved your Mom for her safety. It is very difficult, I know. I have enjoyed reading your support letters about your Mom because we did it over 10 years with 3 of our parents. Eventually we had to move each one and it was hard. It was such a gift to us to have had that time with them and we enjoyed spending time with them and others at the care centers. Thank you for sharing your Mom with us.
