Jennie and I left home a little after 7:00 am. It was raining "pitchforks and hammer handles!" The sound of the rain hitting the roof of the car was so loud at times we had to shout to hear each other. We passed several cars that had "hydroplaned" right off the road, and one very bad accident. Things didn't look good for the Memory Walk.
After a little over an hour, we followed the line of cars into the Detroit Zoo, surprised that there were so many people willing to come out in such bad weather to participate in the walk to raise money to fight Alzheimer's, but there they were.
And there WE were! Six of our 8-woman team braved the downpour only be told the walk had been cancelled. (From left to right: Mel, Jennie, Sue, Ami, Cindy, and Kathy.)
By time we turned in our pledges and picked up our T-shirts, however, the weather had begun to clear. With the threat of lightning over, they opened the zoo and in we went.
We stepped around puddles and followed the course around the enclosures, enjoying the animals. I've already forgotten the name of this fellow, but doesn't he look like he's happy to see us?
Thanks to these five special women who got out of bed a little earlier on a miserable Saturday morning and braved the rain to show their support. Thanks to ALL the special men and women who so generously donated money to help stamp out a despicable disease that robs its victims of their ability to reason and to remember. Together, our 8-woman team raised almost $1500 for research to find a cure for Alzheimer's and for community services for Alzheimer's sufferers.
